(Margarita Suarez-Gaston describing her activities against Castro in Havana....from a Taped interview in 1999 in the USA)
The Phone Calls (1960-61) Margy's age 18 or 17 (she was 5th "in-line" Lourdes, George, Teresa, Lala...Lourdes and George were already out of the Country at a Convent and Seminary)
and alerting people to an article in the newspaper, or something that had just happened.
And so, you only have a few seconds because the telephone company was already....belonged to Castro (the govt).
Not only that, when you make a long distance phone call, many times, the telephones would say, "Viva Fidel Castro !! Viva La Revolucion !!"
So, and, we were asked, you were given the idea of...look in the phone book, I mean, don't carry it with you. Look in the phone book and make only 10 phone calls from one telephone booth, and then move to the next one.
And, I, and then of course, the first thing is you needed to get a bunch of dimes, or nickels, it was 5 cents. And again, the idea was you go to a bank, and to to different banks, and you said that you're par of , you're going to take a bunch of kids to the Zoo, or something like that , and you need nickles for them to buy their snacks.
So, lie, lie, lie, okay. And then of course, Smile, and this was after I did the envelopes. So I went to maybe....and then of course you didn't ever use an bank close to your home.
So i went to about 3 or 4 different banks, and I had 5 dollars worth, or I don't remember.
And i got on my bike, and I make....and i have no trouble with, I mean you could here after a few phone calls, you could hear this Click !! So i remember doing okay with maybe one or two or three booths, and I came to the Last one,and I only had ten more, and n the middle of the fifth one, I heard a Male voice telling someone else, "She is at ....", and giving the address where my telephone booth was.
Very interesting. I didn't have any idea that my sister was doing this in Cuba. So great that she wrote her memories. She was very brave and took a great risk in doing this. signed Lala Mooney (Suarez).
ReplyDeleteI think it’s incredible. Her bravery in the face of incredible, consistent danger. It’s the stuff of war heroines.
ReplyDeleteMakes me feel small and insignificant in a way. What did I do/have I done to combat tyranny. I’ve been a mouthpiece against the Cuban illicit gov’t – that’s about it.
